Accelerometer and Vibrational Studies: MAKO360

by Brantin Perkins, Electrical Engineer

INTRODUCTION

Accelerometers are devices that measure acceleration, including changes in velocity and direction.  They are commonly used in a variety of applications such as navigation, motion sensing, and vibration analysis.  These sensors can measure both static and dynamic acceleration, with some models also capable of detecting tilt, orientation, and vibrational frequency.  These accelerometers work by sensing the force caused by a change in motion or vibrations and in turn, a piezoelectric material internally produces an electric charge that is proportional to the force exerted on it.

This study will show how the MAKO360 will drastically reduce damaging vibrations that can be felt throughout the wrists and hands.  When exposed to excessive vibrations, the human body can experience a range of negative impacts including fatigue, headaches, hearing loss, and joint pain.  Additionally, prolonged exposure to damaging vibrations can lead to more severe health issues such as nerve damage and respiratory problems.  It is important to take measures to reduce exposure to harmful vibrations to protect one’s health and quality of life.  There are several ways to reduce the amount of vibrations felt throughout the body such as using vibration dampening materials like XCGear’s elastomers.

During this study, the MAKO360 has shown to have reduced the overall static vibrations by 39%.  While at half-throttle, the overall reduction in vibrations were even greater at 66%.  This is largely due to XCGear’s ability to eliminate the metal to metal contact with elastomers through their uniquely designed handlebar mount.  During this study the accelerometer was placed in four (4) different positions to measure vibrations at Points A, B, C, & D with a combination of different elastomers that XCGear has to offer (refer to POINT locations at the bottom of the report).  Not only does the data show less felt vibrations in terms of voltage, but it truly feels exceptional to the hands, wrists, and arms while riding.  The MAKO360 is an amazing piece of gear that every rider should add to their arsenal.
